WASHINGTON -- Buffalo Sabres interim head coach Ted Nolan said Sunday the organization was surprised by prospect Mikhail Grigorenkos decision not to report to a junior club in Canada. "We knew obviously players would be disappointed when something like that happened," Nolan said, "but no indication that he wouldnt report." The Sabres assigned the Russian centre to the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League on Saturday, hoping the 19-year-old former first-round draft pick would get some top-line minutes. Grigorenko has struggled to adapt to the NHL in parts of two seasons, with eight points in 43 career games since he was selected No. 12 overall in 2012. But Grigorenko says he wont go to Quebec. He apologized on Facebook on Saturday, adding: "We just need to find a place for me where I can develop and be the best hockey player I can be." Nolan said he doesnt know what the next step will be for Grigorenko and Sabres team president Pat LaFontaine. "Its one thing that you learn -- what you can control, what you cant control," Nolan said. "Him and Pat will take care of that." The Sabres would prefer that Grigorenko play for their Rochester AHL affiliate, but an agreement between the NHL and the Canadian Hockey League doesnt allow teenagers to play in the AHL. Buffalo tried to send Grigorenko to Rochester on a conditioning assignment in November, but the NHL denied the request. Grigorenko has played well in previous stints in juniors, posting 139 points in two seasons with Quebec, including 30 goals in 33 games last season. "P.K. Subban played four years in Belleville, and he turned out pretty good," Nolan said of the Montreal Canadiens defenceman. "Junior hockeys a good place to develop." Grigorenko recently returned from the world junior championships in Malmo, Sweden, where he led Russia to the bronze medal with eight points in seven games. The Titans made it interesting and nearly came up with another Music City Miracle on the games last play. Delanie Walker took the final lateral to the Jets 9-yard line. Geno Smith completed 16-of-28 passes for 179 yards with one touchdown for the Jets (3-11), who snapped a three-game losing streak. Well take the victory. All the hard work in the class room and on the practice field finally paid off, said Jets head coach Rex Ryan. Quarterback Jake Locker made his first start for the Titans (2-12) since Week 5, but left the game late in the second quarter with a left shoulder injury. Locker started because rookie Zach Mettenberger re-injured his right shoulder last week. Charlie Whitehurst replaced Locker and was 10-of-24 for 203 yards in his first action since Week 7. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on a third-down incompletion kept the drive alive. If not for the penalty, New York was looking at a three-and-out. Smith was initially ruled to have fumbled the ball while being dragged down by defensive tackle Jurrell Casey, with center Nick Mangold making the recovery at the New York 6-yard line. Tennessee challenged the play and it was reversed by a review. Later in the game, Casey hit Smith in the helmet during a TV timeout, setting off a melee. Leon Washington muffed the free kick and T.J. Graham recovered the ball for the Jets at the Tennessee 40-yard line. New York came away with no points off the turnover as Nick Folk hit the crossbar on a 53-yard field goal attempt. Folk did make a 51-yard try with 2:08 remaining in the second quarter. After Succop made a 33-yarder, Smith hooked up with Eric Decker for what appeared to be an 81-yard touchdown on the first play of the ensuing possession. A brawl broke out between the teams during the review. Players were jawing at one another and Casey punched Smith. I love the courage, but in close games like that we got to be smart, Walker said. The touchdown wound up being wiped out because Decker stepped out of bounds at the Tennessee 33-yard line. Casey was hit with an unnecessary roughness penalty, moving the ball to the 18. The Jets grabbed a 10-8 lead when Smith found John Conner on 4th-and-1 for a 9-yard touchdown. Game Notes This marked the third consecutive season in which the teams met at LP Field ...
