Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Nicolas Deslauriers, Zemgus Girgensons and Chris Stewart scored in the third period to pull Buffalo out of a 3-0 hole and the Sabres snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-3 shootout win over the New York Islanders on Saturday night. Buffalos goals, highlighted by Girgensons short-handed tally, came in a span of 5:12 in the period. Stewart tied the score with 8:09 remaining. Jhonas Enroth made 33 saves in the win, including 17 after the second period, then stopped two shots in the shootout after the first Islanders skater fired wide. He improved to 5-0 in shootouts this season. What a gutsy win, said Sabres forward Drew Stafford, who had two assists. The Islanders placed goaltender Jaroslav Halak on injured reserve Saturday with a lower-body injury and recalled Kevin Poulin from the AHLs Bridgeport Sound Tigers to make his first appearance in the NHL this season. Poulin made 17 saves in the first two periods, then allowed three goals on six shots in the third. John Tavares had two goals in the loss and Nick Leddy scored one. Tavares made one too many moves as the last skater in the shootout and Enroth stopped him with his right pad. I thought we controlled most of the game, Tavares said. We had opportunities, we just didnt capitalize. Deslauriers finally got Buffalo on the board 6:39 into the third period with a snap shot that hugged the ice to beat Poulin, and he set up Girgensons short- handed goal with a sharp pass through the neutral zone. Girgensons fought off defenseman Johnny Boychuk to score and Stewart found the back of the net just 1:50 later on a pass from Stafford, who was just out of the penalty box. Earlier, Leddy gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead 4:33 into the game with a slapshot from inside the blue line that beat Enroths blocker. Tavares scored twice in a span of 3:09 in the second period to make it 3-0. He beat Enroth with a backhand after a nice individual effort through the slot just shy of the 12-minute mark, then buried a one-timer near the crease at 15:05 off Josh Baileys pass from the low right side. "I was fortunate to play many years at this level with a great organization and unbelievable teammates," said Hejduk in a statement. "I realized my lifelong dream of not only playing in the NHL but winning a Stanley Cup. My family and I are proud to call Denver home and are enjoying our time together." The 38-year-old native of the Czech Republic spent 14 seasons in the NHL, all with the Avalanche. "Milan was one of the most humble players I ever had the privilege of competing with," said Joe Sakic, the Avalanches Executive Vice-President of Hockey Operations in a statement. "On the ice, he had one of the quickest and smoothest hands of any teammate I ever played with. His release, along with his hockey sense and vision, made him one of the premier goal scorers in the NHL during his prime. Milan was a true winner and would do anything he could to help our team win. He was a quiet leader who led by example andd always represented this organization and himself with class.dddddddddddd" Hejduks career was a decorated one. The three-time All-Star won a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2001 and two Olympic medals (gold in 1998 and bronze in 2006). In 2002-03, Hejduk won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy for finishing the season as the NHLs top goal-scorer with 50. He eclipsed the 30-goal plateau five times and scored at least 20 goals in 11 times. Last season saw Hejduks worst offensive output, scoring only four times in 29 games of the lockout-shortened year, finding himself a healthy scratch at times. The Avalanche did not offer Hejduk a contract following last season, although, Hejduk did express desire to play on. He finishes his career with 375 goals and 470 assists in 1020 games played, the second-most in Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques history. He holds the franchise record for most overtime goals with nine. Hejduk is the third-highest scoring Czech player in NHL history behind Jaromir Jagr and Patrik Elias. ' ' '
